Kenya topped the global rankings for time spent on social media, according to the recent Digital 2024 Report in partnership with Visual Capitalist. The report revealed that Kenyans spend an average of 3 hours and 43 minutes per day on social media—significantly above the global daily average of 2 hours and 30 minutes. This is an impressive one hour and 13 minutes more than the worldwide average for social media usage among internet users aged 16 to 64. Notably, these figures only cover time spent on social media platforms, excluding other types of internet browsing. Kenya’s high social media engagement places it ahead of other nations, including South Africa (3 hours 37 minutes), Brazil (3 hours 34 minutes), the Philippines (3 hours 33 minutes), and Nigeria (3 hours 23 minutes), which rounded out the top five. Ghana and Egypt also featured in the top twenty, where users spend around 2 hours 43 minutes and 2 hours 41 minutes daily, respectively. The report further highlighted that, on average, women spend 16 minutes more on social media than men each day. Among the platforms, TikTok recorded the highest average time spent per user, while YouTube commands the largest share of overall social media time. At the other end of the spectrum, Japan had the lowest average, with users spending only 1 hour and 53 minutes daily on social media. Globally, with around 5 billion social media users, humanity is projected to collectively spend a staggering 500 million years on social media in 2024 alone!
