The Next President Should Be a Gen Z or Millennial, Ex-CJ Willy Mutunga says

Retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has advocated for Kenya’s next president to be a young leader from Generation Z or a millennial, ideally between the ages of 27 and 43.

He believes that leaders from his generation are often entrenched in tribalism, making them unfit to drive the country forward.

“I think the next alternative leadership must come from Gen Zs and millennials, not our generation who go the usual way of tribalism and so forth,” Mutunga said.

Speaking at a ceremony marking 12 years of the Supreme Court under the new Constitution, Mutunga underscored the importance of an independent Judiciary.

Mutunga also proposed creating an official office for retired Chief Justices to help uphold the Constitution, pointing out that such a role could strengthen the Judiciary’s independence.
