Ruto Appoints Raila’s Sister as Chair of KEMFRI Board

President William Ruto has named Dr. Wenwa Akinyi Oranga Odinga, sister to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, as the Chairperson of the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMFRI) Board.

The announcement was made through a Gazette Notice issued on Friday, November 2024, with the appointment taking effect immediately and set to last for a three-year term.

The notice reads, “In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 6 (1) (a) of the State Corporations Act, as read together with Section 16 (2) and the Fourth Schedule of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Act, 2013…”

Dr. Oranga brings a wealth of experience to the role and will oversee the institute’s mandate of promoting sustainable marine and fisheries research in Kenya.

Oranga has been appointed to head the board, which undertakes research in marine and freshwater fisheries, aquaculture, environmental and ecological studies, and marine research.

This is not her first appointment in a lucrative job. In 2023, Governor Gladys Wanga nominated her to the Public Service and Revenue Board members of the Homa Bay County Assembly.
