Ruto Responds to Catholic Bishops’ Criticism of Lies and Unfulfilled Promises

President William Ruto has responded to allegations from the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) accusing his administration of fostering a “culture of lies” and failing to deliver on key promises to Kenyans.

Speaking on Friday during a graduation ceremony at Tangaza University in Nairobi, Ruto urged leaders, clergy, and citizens to prioritize truth in public discourse. In a veiled rebuttal, he cautioned against hypocrisy, stating that “people can become victims of the things they accuse others of doing.”

“Even as we engage in public discourse on matters important to Kenyans, we must be careful to be factual, lest we fall into the very traps we point out in others,” Ruto remarked, drawing laughter and apparent agreement from the audience.

The KCCB, led by Archbishop Maurice Muhatia of Kisumu, had issued a scathing statement on Thursday criticizing the government for unfulfilled promises, widespread corruption, and misplaced priorities. They highlighted pressing issues such as high taxation, unemployment, challenges in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), and the transition from the NHIF to the Social Health Authority (SHA).

“We have repeatedly voiced these concerns, yet the government remains unresponsive. Despite the relative calm, there is growing anxiety as many Kenyans lose trust in their leaders,” said Archbishop Muhatia.

The exchange underscores the growing tension between the Church and the government over pressing socio-economic issues facing the nation.
