Mudavadi Orders Nationwide Crackdown on Unroadworthy PSVs Ahead of Festive Season
Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has directed the National Police Service (NPS) to initiate a nationwide crackdown on all unroadworthy Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) in preparation for the festive season.
In a statement issued on Friday, November 15, Mudavadi emphasized that all PSVs must display the registered name of their Sacco, company, or institution before operating. He also mandated strict adherence to road safety regulations, including possession of valid inspection certificates, adherence to licensed routes, and a valid Road Service License.

“I hereby instruct all traffic police officers to ensure that all PSVs are roadworthy and are driven safely. They must ensure that all the PSVs on the road have the registered name of the Sacco, company, or institution,” he stated.
Mudavadi’s directive follows a tragic accident along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway that claimed 13 lives on Wednesday, November 13. The accident involved a speeding trailer that lost control and collided with two matatus. Ten passengers died on the spot, while three others succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital.

“I am saddened by the grisly accident and join in mourning with the families who have tragically lost their loved ones. In this time of profound grief, may the Lord grant them comfort and strength,” Mudavadi expressed.
He urged all road users to exercise vigilance and caution, particularly as students continue sitting for their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
The CS further highlighted an alarming increase in road fatalities. Between January and November this year, 4,047 people have died on Kenyan roads, compared to 3,726 during the same period in 2023. Accidents have risen to 20,369 compared to 19,262 last year, with motorcyclists, pillion passengers, and pedestrians bearing the brunt.
“The statistics indicate a worrying trend. I urge motorists to drive carefully and for PSVs to strictly comply with road safety regulations to prevent further loss of life,” Mudavadi said.

The Interior Ministry has vowed to enforce the crackdown to enhance road safety and reduce accidents during the festive season.
