Kenyan TikToker Kayet Orwa bravely shared her battle with Sickle Cell Anemia, a genetic disorder affecting the shape of red blood cells crucial for oxygen transport in the body. Despite living with the condition for 18 years, which causes some red blood cells to become rigid and block blood flow, Kayet has been vocal about her struggles.
On her YouTube channel, she candidly discusses the excruciating pain episodes associated with the disease, describing it as unbearable, surpassing any pain scale. Diagnosed at the age of 3 and now 21, she has faced the constant fear of the condition being life-threatening, especially poignant after losing her brother to it.
Kayet, who underwent surgery on her right hand due to complications from Sickle Cell Anemia, also battles osteomyelitis, a bone infection stemming from the disease. Despite multiple surgeries, including as recent as 2020, the infection remains active, complicating her health journey.
Reflecting on her condition, Kayet emphasizes the challenges she faces, including bouts with malaria, which exacerbate her health complications. She refers to Sickle Cell Anemia as ‘my sickness,’ a reminder of her ongoing struggle with its debilitating effects.
While aware of a potential cure through bone marrow transplant, she acknowledges the financial and practical hurdles in accessing this treatment, including the need for a suitable donor. Despite these challenges, Kayet remains resilient, continuing to share her journey to raise awareness about Sickle Cell Anemia.
