New Twist as ACK Bishops Challenge Catholic Leaders Over Criticism of President Ruto

A section of clergy in Kilifi County on Sunday criticized their Catholic counterparts for publicly condemning the Kenya Kwanza government during a Thursday press briefing. The Catholic bishops had raised concerns over issues such as the challenges in rolling out the Social Health Authority (SHA), extrajudicial killings, and rampant abductions.

Speaking at the commemoration of the late Kilifi North MP’s father, Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Bishop Reuben Katite expressed disapproval of the bishops’ approach. He described it as disrespectful to air grievances publicly instead of engaging the President directly.

“Religious leaders who know the Bible well have claimed that this government is not chosen by God, despite knowing that leadership is ordained by God,” Bishop Katite said. “Rather than praying for correction where things go wrong, they openly declare the government as illegitimate. How is that acceptable?”

Political leaders at the event echoed these sentiments. South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro urged religious leaders to provide constructive guidance, not just for congregants but also for politicians.

“Our leadership is earthly, but yours comes from above to lead the soul,” Osoro remarked. “If we err, correct us lovingly, not destructively.”

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi also weighed in, highlighting the clergy’s role in shaping societal values while emphasizing the need for respectful dialogue.

“Bishops, the respect you command is immense,” Kingi said. “If you see someone erring, don’t call others to shame them publicly, as was done recently.”

The Catholic bishops, under the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), had on Thursday, November 14, criticized President William Ruto’s administration over various national challenges.

These included rising taxes, youth unemployment, concerns over the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), and the funding of education. They also cited sector-specific issues like the increased fees for missionary work permits and the government’s alleged disregard for their petitions.

“This culture of lies, unkept promises, and misplaced priorities is unacceptable and must be addressed,” the KCCB stated. “We urge the government to engage in genuine consultations with all stakeholders beyond superficial public participation.”
