The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called for full transparency regarding the financial implications and losses tied to the controversial Adani Group deals.
In a statement on Thursday, LSK President Faith Odhiambo emphasized the importance of accountability and strict adherence to protocols to protect national assets.
“We urge the government to disclose all costs and losses incurred and to implement measures that minimize the country’s financial risks,” Odhiambo stated.
This demand follows President William Ruto’s directive to immediately cancel agreements involving the Adani Group, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), and the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco).
The agreements, which had faced significant public and legal opposition, were flagged as potentially compromising Kenya’s sovereignty. The LSK had previously challenged the deals in court, filing cases on September 9 and October 23, 2024.
Odhiambo commended the President’s decision to terminate the agreements, describing it as a “reconciliatory and people-centred approach” that reflects public sentiment.
“We welcome this directive, which aligns with the will and best interests of Kenyans,” she said. “While we were prepared to see the legal process through, the government’s acknowledgment of public concerns demonstrates a proactive and inclusive way to resolve this impasse.”
She also urged the government to prioritize public interests in future policy decisions and encouraged Kenyans to remain vigilant in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and constitutional values under Article 10.
President Ruto announced the cancellations during his State of the Nation address to Parliament, citing new evidence from local investigations and international partners that implicated the Adani Group in corrupt practices.
The terminated agreements involved plans for the Adani Group to take over operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and its engagement with Ketraco. Ruto’s move reflects a firm stance on addressing corruption and preserving national integrity.
