The Garsen-Witu-Lamu road section between Gamba and Lango la Simba has been temporarily shut down by the Kenya Highways Authority (KeNHA) due to the overflowing of the Tana River.
KeNHA Director General, Kungu Ndungu, explained that heavy rains upstream had caused the Tana River to breach its banks, leading to the inundation of the road and disrupting transportation activities.
The closure is regrettable, but the agency assured the public of continuous assessment and updates regarding the situation.
This closure isn’t unprecedented; a similar scenario occurred last December when the river overflowed due to heavy rainfall, rendering the road impassable.
KeNHA urged motorists to refrain from traveling until the water levels recede and further assessments determine the road’s safety.
The floods have inflicted extensive damage on vital infrastructure such as railways, roads, and bridges across the country.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Murkomen emphasized the ministry’s commitment to repairing the infrastructure and ensuring smooth movement of people and goods, while also cautioning the public to be vigilant when encountering flooded areas.
