Allegations linking him to the tragic passing of fellow marathoner Kelvin Kiptum led to a barrage of online threats against Kipchoge, instilling profound fear in the renowned athlete.
The athlete recalled receiving numerous messages, some containing threats directed at his family and career. As he recounted the tormenting ordeal from his home in Eldoret, Eliud Kipchoge was overcome with emotions, breaking down under the weight of the experience.
“All the social media platforms were alleging, ‘Eliud was involved in the death of this boy.’ I received a lot of negative messages,” Eliud disclosed.
Among the onslaught of attacks were death threats aimed at his family, calls to dismantle his investments, threats to burn down his house, and even demands to shut down his training camp.
According to Kipchoge, his initial response upon receiving the distressing messages was to ensure the safety of his family.
As he recounted the ordeal, the athlete firmly denied any involvement in the death of Kiptum, stating, “It did not happen, but that’s how the world operates,” Kipchoge observed.
“I began reaching out to numerous individuals; I was genuinely frightened,” Kipchoge narrated.
The two-time Olympic champion disclosed that he had to postpone various family activities as a precautionary measure for their safety.
Kipchoge also revealed that he had to change his training venues and experienced the loss of approximately 90% of his friends.
“The toughest moment was when I called my mom, and she urged me to stay safe. But her words also gave me strength,” the athlete recounted.
“It was deeply hurtful to discover that even people close to me, including teammates, uttered hurtful words against me,” he added.

On February 12, reports emerged that Kelvin Kiptum, the world-record marathoner, tragically died in a road accident along the Eldoret-Kaptagat highway. Kiptum, aged 24, passed away just two months before his attempt to break the world record by becoming the first person to run a marathon in under two hours.
On the 23rd of the same month, Kiptum was laid to rest in his village in Chepsamo, Elgeyo Marakwet County. The funeral was attended by a distinguished delegation, including President William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.
