Tanzania has officially declared that Cyclone Hidaya has completely lost its strength.

Cyclone Hidaya

The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has confirmed on Saturday that following a meticulous 6-hour monitoring of weather patterns, Tropical Cyclone Hidaya “has completely lost its strength.”

Hidaya, initially forecasted to make landfall in Tanzania and Kenya over the weekend, significantly weakened after hitting Mafia Island on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

The cyclone wreaked havoc on Mafia Island, situated approximately 130 kilometers southeast of Dar es Salaam.

“The remnants of the rain clouds that accompanied the Tropical Cyclone have been observed to weaken and spread out in various areas of the southern region of our country, particularly in Lindi, Mtwara, Morogoro, and neighboring areas,” stated the TMA.

Tanzanians have been advised to remain vigilant and heed any forecast information to ensure their safety amidst the torrential rains.

Fortunately, Kenya was spared from the direct impact of the cyclone due to its position near the Equator.

The Kenya Meteorological Department noted that although Kenya will experience the effects of the cyclone, they will be mitigated due to its distance from the cyclone’s center.

“The physics laws governing cyclone formation remain unchanged. Indeed, we will feel the effects from the fringes of the tropical cyclone, but it will weaken to become a depression. The eye of the cyclone will make landfall just about or below 5°S from the equator,” affirmed the meteorological department.

The East African region has endured heavy rainfall over recent months, resulting in fatalities and displacements.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that this disaster has claimed the lives of over 400 people thus far, including at least 210 in Kenya, over 150 in Tanzania, and others in Burundi, Rwanda, and Somalia.
