Church calls on gov't to put an end to abductions

Hundreds of Kenyans ushered in 2025 in churches across the country, seeking blessings and divine guidance for the year ahead. Religious leaders, including those from the Holy Family Basilica and All Saints Cathedral, emphasized the importance of reconciliation, urging the faithful to foster harmony in their families, communities, and the nation.

“God is love—you must love your enemies as you love yourself. God is merciful—you must show mercy to others. And as God is gracious, may His grace be upon you,” stated Abraham Mulwa, the Country Presiding Bishop of the African Inland Church (AIC).

Clerics also addressed pressing national issues, urging the government to prioritize justice and put an end to abductions, while pledging to hold leaders accountable.

“We continue praying for sobriety in leadership. We pray for the President to remain focused. While we heard his speech yesterday, as a church, we must maintain our prophetic role—to point out where the government falls short, even when told to keep quiet,” said Thegu Mutahi, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA).

“This is the year we must turn to God with confidence, knowing He hears us. After 60 years as a nation, it is time to reflect on our missteps and seek His forgiveness and restoration,” Mulwa added.

The church leaders also voiced their dissatisfaction with the transition from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Authority, calling on the government to prioritize service delivery over discussions about extending political term limits.

“We are deeply saddened by the terrorizing of young people in this country. When we harm them, we harm our future. We call on the State to end abductions,” Thegu emphasized.

Echoing this sentiment, Catholic Bishop Antony Ngala of Migori remarked, “We pray for the Lord to grant us good leadership and instill love for one another, as only through such love can we overcome these challenges.”
