Chaos in Nakuru County Assembly as MCAs Clash Over Leadership Changes
A heated leadership dispute in the Nakuru County Assembly turned chaotic, leaving several Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) injured after a brawl erupted during a mid-morning session.
The commotion unfolded shortly after Speaker Joel Karuri announced the appointment of Keringet Ward MCA William Mutai as the new Majority Leader, replacing Mosop Ward MCA Alex Lagat, who had held the position for two years. The announcement sparked fierce opposition, with rival MCAs exchanging verbal barbs that quickly escalated into a physical altercation.
In the midst of the fracas, Kiamaina MCA Paul Warigi was struck on the neck with an egg, prompting the Speaker to temporarily suspend the session. Viral videos captured chaotic scenes, including MCAs hurling insults and some choosing to walk out of the chamber to avoid the violence.
Addressing the media afterward, MCA Warigi condemned the incident, saying, “When the Speaker made the announcement, an MCA threw an egg at me. As leaders, we should not stoop to this level.”
The political rivalry has deepened divisions within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, with some MCAs accusing its leadership of failing to resolve internal conflicts.
The leadership changes follow Majority Chief Whip Fadhili Msuri’s acknowledgment of William Mutai’s election by party members, which ousted Alex Lagat amid growing tensions within the Assembly.
This incident underscores the ongoing power struggles in the Nakuru County Assembly, reflecting broader political challenges within the region.
