Waiguru Replaced as Council of Governors Chair

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has been replaced as the Chairperson of the Council of Governors, sparking speculation that she may be poised to take on a new political role as the next Deputy President following the potential impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua.

On Monday, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi was elected as the new Chairperson of the Council, succeeding Waiguru, whose tenure concluded after serving two terms. The elections took place at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, where Abdullahi was declared the new Chair, with Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga elected as his Vice Chairperson.

Ahmed Abdullahi was elected as the Chairperson of the Council of Governors from a pool of five contenders, which included Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

The election, which lasted over five hours, took several factors into account, including the candidates’ prior participation in the Council’s meetings. Ultimately, Abdullahi secured the position.

This leadership change comes amid growing speculation that Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru is among the top contenders to replace Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua if his impeachment is successful. Reports suggest that President William Ruto may choose his next Deputy from the Mt. Kenya region, with Waiguru, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah among the potential candidates.

As the newly elected Chairperson of the Council of Governors, Ahmed Abdullahi will be responsible for advocating for the timely allocation of resources to counties.

His role will also include promoting visionary leadership, facilitating the exchange of best governance practices, and providing a unified voice on policy matters affecting the performance of County Governments.
