A significant majority of Kenyans are firmly against the proposed extension of term limits for the presidency and other elective positions.
An Afrobarometer survey reveals that nearly nine out of ten Kenyans (86%) favor maintaining the current two-term limit on the presidency, a sentiment that has held strong for over a decade.
The survey notes that “most Kenyans believe democracy is the best form of governance, with strong support for regular, open, and fair elections as the preferred way to choose leaders. Support for the two-term presidential limit has been consistently high over the past 10 years.”
Additionally, 77% of respondents endorse open and honest elections as the ideal method for selecting political leaders.

Political affiliation also influences views on term limits. The survey shows strong support across the country’s two main parties, with 81% of United Democratic Alliance supporters and 90% of Orange Democratic Movement supporters in favor of the current limits.
Support for term limits is especially strong among those who prioritize democracy, with 75% preferring it over other systems. In contrast, 80% of those indifferent to the type of government they have still see term limits as valuable.
