“Some of the gangs were involved in robberies, extortion, murder, drug trafficking, and looting during anti-government protests,” the report stated.
Notably, there was a significant reduction in recorded gang-related crimes, with 721 cases reported between September 2023 and August 2024, compared to 1,113 cases in the previous year—a decrease of 392 cases, or 35.3%.
President Ruto attributed the rise of gang activities to factors such as school dropouts, unemployment, drug abuse, and funding by politicians.
