Mihang’o Residents Protest Alleged Public Land Grabbing
Residents of Mihang’o in Embakasi East Constituency staged protests on Sunday over what they claimed was an attempt to grab public land earmarked for constructing a court, a chief’s camp, and a police station.
The peaceful demonstration targeted an unnamed Nairobi tycoon, whom residents accused of attempting to seize the land meant for local security infrastructure.
Marching to the disputed site, they demanded urgent intervention from the National Land Commission (NLC) to stop the alleged encroachment.
According to the residents, the tycoon has been sending individuals to the site under cover of darkness to place boundary markers, raising concerns about his intentions.
“This land is allocated for a chief’s camp and our police. But now, a developer whose identity we do not even know is trying to grab it,” a resident lamented.
The community warned that failure by the NLC to act could result in increased insecurity in the area. They vowed to protect the land collectively, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding public utilities for the benefit of all.
“It’s up to us to organise as a community to defend this land and any other public property in Mihang’o,” another resident declared.
They reiterated that public land, designated for government projects to serve the community, must not fall into private hands.
Kenya’s public land is governed by the National Land Policy, the Land Act (2012), and the Constitution (2010), which mandate that such land should remain under government custody for public benefit.
“We will not allow anyone to grab what belongs to us as Mihang’o residents,” one protestor firmly stated.
