Three outstanding nurses who have demonstrated excellence in medical and scientific research were honored by The Nairobi Hospital during an event commemorating International Nurses Week. The ceremony, attended by the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer James Nyamongo and senior management team members, celebrated the exceptional leadership and achievements of these nurses in various fields, including oncology, infection prevention, and scientific research.

Felix Chumo emerged as the overall winner, credited with four noteworthy presentations. His contributions included participation in prestigious events such as the 49th Oncology Nursing Society Congress in Washington D.C. in April 2024 and the African Organisation for Research and Training Centre Conference in Senegal in November 2023. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in both the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) Annual Scientific Conference in Nyeri and the NNAK Oncology Chapter in Mombasa.

Senior nurses Beatrice Kanyoro and Linet Maobe were recognized as first runners-up for their exceptional presentations during the Infection Prevention Network and the NNAK Infection Prevention Chapter events, respectively.

Nyamongo commended the nurses for their steadfast dedication to delivering top-quality care and their compassionate service to those in need, which he described as emblematic of the nursing profession’s finest qualities.

Dr. Monica Juma, the National Security Advisor and chief guest at the event, emphasized the importance of not only celebrating nurses’ invaluable contributions but also acknowledging their achievements across various domains. She highlighted the significance of recognizing nurses for their exceptional performance and research contributions, emphasizing that their endeavors not only advance healthcare but also demonstrate innovation and intellectual curiosity.

International Nurses Week, observed globally, serves as an annual tribute to the remarkable contributions of nurses to healthcare and society. The week, which typically spans from May 6 to May 12, coinciding with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing, was established by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in 1965.
