Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has announced plans to introduce a motion seeking to amend the impeachment law, making it mandatory to hold a referendum before removing a President, Deputy President, Governors, or their deputies from office.
Speaking at NICA Church in Manyatta during the ordination of five lay leaders, Mukunji emphasized that the electorate should have the final say in deciding the fate of those holding the Presidency and county offices.
He referenced the challenges faced by Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, arguing that it is unjust for a leader elected by millions to be ousted by a small group of “selfish leaders.”
Mukunji argued that the Constitution is being misused by lawmakers seeking to settle personal scores with elected leaders, using impeachment as a tool to remove them from office. He stressed that such actions undermine the democratic choice of millions of voters.

“I will table a motion to change the law on impeachment so that when someone is being impeached, the voters speak in the form of a referendum,” he said.
“We must change the impeachment process of even Governors. You have all seen the troubles bedevilling Mwangaza in Meru; her only mistake ni kukosana na wadosi kidogo.”
According to the Constitution, Governors and their deputies can be impeached if a majority of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) vote in favor of an impeachment motion presented before them. Once passed by the county assembly, the motion is forwarded to the Senate for consideration and a final decision.
