- Kimani Mbugua is diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
- He has undergone rehabilitation multiple times from 2021 to 2024.
Former Citizen TV reporter Kimani Mbugua has been transported via air ambulance to a rehabilitation center in Mombasa.
The announcement came from former governor Mike Sonko, who shared the news on his social media platforms.
In a previous interview, Sonko had pledged to relocate Kimani to a rehabilitation facility where boxing champion Conjestina Achieng is currently receiving treatment.
“Yesterday, we managed to airlift former Citizen TV journalist Kimani mbugua to Mombasa rehabilitation and empowerment centre for further treatment as promised earlier during the oga obina interview. Let’s pray for him. I’m 100% sure, he’ll be OK.”
In May 2024, Sonko paid a visit to Kimani Mbugua at Mathare Hospital, where the journalist was undergoing various medical assessments.
“I, along with Oga Obinna and Kimani Mbugua’s family, visited Mathare Hospital to check on their recovery progress,” Sonko shared on Twitter. “The medical team warmly welcomed us and provided updates on their condition. Although Eunice Omollo was receiving treatment in the women’s ward during our visit, I had the opportunity to interact with Kimani Mbugua.”

During their time together, Sonko and Kimani reminisced about past interviews and engaged in discussions about Kimani’s current challenges.
Sonko emphasized his intention to relocate the young journalist, who has been grappling with mental health issues, from Mathare to the Mombasa Women Rehabilitation Center. He expressed confidence that a change of environment would contribute positively to Kimani’s recovery process.
“Kimani Mbugua has made significant contributions to the world through his work, and it’s our turn to provide him with hope, love, and care,” Sonko remarked. “We were highly impressed by the quality of care provided by the hospital staff.
Therefore, our decision to transfer them to Mombasa is primarily to offer a change of surroundings, which we believe can greatly aid in their recovery. That’s why, in consultation with the family, we’ve chosen to move them to the Mombasa Women Rehabilitation Center, where Conjestina Achieng is currently receiving treatment, in hopes of facilitating lasting positive change.”
