KEBS Speaks On Regulation Of Okra Water And Uji Power

The demand for Okra plants in Kenya has surged dramatically, leading to a notable increase in its price from its previous obscurity. Concurrently, whispers of the miraculous benefits of Okra water have spread rapidly among Kenyan women, believed to enhance sexual health.

Meanwhile, Kenyan men are embracing the traditional elixir known as Uji Power, comprised of a blend of arrowroot, peanut, cassava, and pumpkin seed flours, along with undisclosed secret ingredients. Promising vitality and vigor, Uji Power holds a strong allure.

Amidst this fervor, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has raised concerns about the safety of consuming Okra water and Uji Power. Dr. Muriira Karau, the Director of Quality Assurance and Inspection at KEBS, emphasizes the need for regulation to ensure both public health and adherence to standards. Collaboration between relevant agencies and innovators is urged to establish regulations that assure consumers of efficacy and safety.

Regarding Uji Power, Dr. Muriira explains that KEBS is developing a code of practice to govern the production and handling of traditional porridges and natural juices, including those sold informally. This initiative aims to support the commercialization and hygienic handling of these products.

Addressing the Media-Editors Forum on KEBS’s mandate awareness in Naivasha, Dr. Muriira underscores KEBS’s focus on manufactured and packaged products, particularly benefiting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to enhance profitability and livelihoods. He highlights KEBS’s subsidized certification packages and incentives for SMEs, facilitating access to both domestic and East African markets.

Additionally, KEBS plans to harmonize standards with regional bodies to promote Kenyan SME products. Dr. Muriira emphasizes KEBS’s support for local innovators, recognizing the emerging innovation landscape and the opportunities it presents for SMEs.
