Government to Link Pay Bill Services with KRA System by Christmas, Says Moses Kuria

Moses Kuria has announced that the government will integrate all pay bill and till numbers with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) system to improve tax collection.

According to Kuria, a senior advisor to President William Ruto on economic matters, the integration is set to be completed by December 25, 2024. He noted that this initiative aims to boost government revenue to support various national programs.

“Come Christmas 2024, all pay bills will also be Virtual Electronic Tax Receipts (ETR) for purposes of KRA,” he announced.

Kuria pointed out that the formal sector has shouldered the bulk of tax collection, despite the informal sector comprising a larger number of individuals earning income through various businesses. He acknowledged that there may be resistance to the integration, but emphasized the government’s commitment to fully implementing the program.

“I know there is going to be some noise but I also want someone to tell me where we agreed that someone should not pay taxes. Maybe I missed that memo”

“As far as I know, paying taxes is within our constitution and our law. When those people come to our tax bracket maybe those 3 million people (in the formal sector), we will be able to lower the income taxes for them,” he asserted.

Kuria’s announcement came just days after Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi urged the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to devise innovative ways to broaden the country’s tax base.
