Gachagua Alleges Surveillance by Security Agents in Unmarked Vehicles
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised concerns over alleged surveillance by security agents in unmarked vehicles, claiming they have been following him everywhere he goes.
In an update shared on Wednesday, November 20, Gachagua alleged that the agents have also been monitoring visitors to his Nairobi residence.
“Security agents in unmarked cars have been following me wherever I go. They are parking at the entrance of my Nairobi residence, taking note of all my visitors, and trailing me whenever I leave the house—even to my rural home in Nyeri,” he stated.
To support his claims, Gachagua shared a photo of a saloon car he said had been following him. He further alleged that the vehicle bore a number plate registered to a lorry.
“This surveillance and intimidation of Kenyans was last witnessed during the era of the dreaded ‘Special Branch’ during the 24 years of Moi’s misrule. In this era of extrajudicial killings, forced abductions, and disappearances by state agents, I have thought it important to share with Kenyans the harassment and intimidation I am going through and inform them to hold the state responsible if I am harmed by state agents. I request the state to leave me alone! You hounded me out of office, and you should now allow me to enjoy my peace as a private citizen,” Gachagua stated.

“Last Sunday, this saloon car parked at the entrance to my residence trailed me to PCEA Kerarapon Church, followed me to where I had lunch, and back to my house. A check on the NTSA portal revealed its number plate is registered to a lorry,” he added.
Gachagua expressed concern for his safety, urging the government to be held accountable if any harm comes to him.

This development comes just weeks after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) denied allegations of attempting to block Gachagua from attending a church service at Priesthood Fellowship Church in Kahawa West, Nairobi County.
Bishop JJ Gitahi had earlier alleged that the State tried to prevent Gachagua’s attendance, citing potential incitement risks.
However, the DCI, in a statement issued on Tuesday, November 12, refuted the claims, asserting that they operate strictly within the law.
“We want to clarify that these allegations are entirely false and appear to misrepresent the actions and intentions of the DCI. We operate within the parameters of the rule of law and remain committed to safeguarding the liberties of individuals and institutions,” the agency said.
