The United States Embassy in Nairobi has issued a security alert advising its citizens of potential terror threats. The embassy warns that terrorists may target popular locations frequented by foreigners, including tourists, in Nairobi and other areas across Kenya.
The alert emphasizes the need for increased caution due to the risks of terrorism and kidnapping. It specifically notes that locations such as hotels, restaurants, embassies, malls, markets, schools, police stations, and places of worship may be at risk.
The warning also highlights that attacks could occur with little or no advance notice, and stresses that vigilance is particularly important around significant dates such as September 11th, the September 21st Westgate Mall attack, and the October 7th Hamas attack against Israel.
Citizens have been advised to remain vigilant in areas frequented by tourists and foreigners, review their personal security plans, and stay aware of their surroundings.
The embassy also urges US citizens to keep updated through local media, avoid areas with demonstrations, and steer clear of crowded places.
Interior CS Kithure Kindiki reported in October 2023 that since the 1998 bombing, terror attacks have claimed at least 500 lives in Kenya.
The August 7, 1998 bombing, carried out by Al-Qaeda terrorists, targeted the American Embassy and resulted in 213 fatalities, including 201 Kenyans and 12 Americans.
