Kithure Kindiki has officially assumed the role of Deputy Party Leader of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), marking the end of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s tenure in the position.
Kindiki, who was sworn in as Kenya’s new Deputy President in early November, was formally appointed UDA’s deputy leader, as announced in a statement from the party on Monday, November 11.
The statement clarified: “Following resolutions of the National Assembly and Senate, and in accordance with Articles 75(3) and 45(7) of the constitution, Rigathi Gachagua is no longer able to serve as Deputy Party Leader and thus ceases to hold this office.”
A party insider confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that Gachagua was not expelled from UDA, leaving it up to him to remain an ordinary member or choose to leave.
“At this point, only the leadership change has taken place. Gachagua has been replaced, but no decision has been made on expulsion. He is welcome to stay on as a member if he wishes,” the source explained.
When asked if Gachagua would have any future responsibilities in UDA, the source added, “He is now an ordinary member, joining around 7 million members of UDA, 3.5 million of whom are registered voters.”
This leadership shift follows statements from UDA Chairperson, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who, on November 1, hinted at imminent changes in the party’s hierarchy during Kindiki’s swearing-in ceremony, citing the UDA party constitution.
Kindiki acknowledged his new role at UDA’s NEC meeting on Monday, expressing gratitude for the party’s swift action to maintain continuity within its leadership.
“I am honored by this new responsibility,” Kindiki stated, “and I pledge to work collaboratively with every part of our party. First and foremost, I remain a committed UDA member.”
