“The Senate is scheduled to convene today to hear charges against impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a special gazette notice, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced that the session will begin at 9:30 a.m.
At the sitting, the Senate will also determine whether the case will proceed through a select committee or be addressed by the full plenary.”
“Pursuant to Article 145 (3) (a) of the Constitution and Standing Order 78 (1) of the Senate Standing Orders, I appoint the sitting of the Senate on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at 9.30 a.m. as the sitting convened for the purpose of hearing the charges in the matter of the proposed removal from office, by impeachment, of His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua, E.G.H., Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya,” it reads.
“Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was impeached on Tuesday following a vote by 281 MPs in favor of his removal from office, surpassing the constitutional threshold of 233 votes.
The Senate notice comes just hours after the Clerk of the National Assembly formally notified the Clerk of the Senate about the MPs’ approval of the impeachment motion.”
