Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi on Wednesday sought to calm tensions in the Mt. Kenya region following the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Sudi assured the vote-rich region that if Gachagua were removed from office, his replacement would still come from Mt. Kenya.
In a post on his official social media accounts, Sudi, a close ally of President William Ruto, emphasized that Mt. Kenya remains central to the Kenya Kwanza administration’s plans, making it unlikely for the region to be sidelined.
Despite his recent clashes with Gachagua, Sudi clarified that President Ruto’s faction within Kenya Kwanza has no issues with Mt. Kenya leaders, singling out the Deputy President as the exception.
“No one has an issue with the majority of leaders from the mountain, save for one. Â Even his replacement will surely come from the mountain. Sure bet.” the MP posted.
This follows Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse’s filing of an impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday, which garnered the support of 291 lawmakers—well above the required 117 to initiate the process.
Some leaders from Mt. Kenya have accused President William Ruto of orchestrating Gachagua’s impeachment, though Ruto has remained silent on the matter, fueling speculation both within Gachagua’s camp and among the public.
During a press conference on Wednesday, a group of Mt. Kenya leaders from Murang’a County, led by Senator Joe Nyutu, expressed concern over the President’s silence. They alleged that the impeachment effort is a politically motivated move to undermine Gachagua’s influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
“This (Gachagua’s impeachment) would not have happened without Ruto’s blessing. They should know that divorcing Gachagua is divorcing the mountain,” Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu charged.
“We advocate for dialogue, let the two leaders sort out their issues amicably,” Senator Nyutu said.
The impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua accuses him of multiple constitutional violations, including inciting ethnic tension through reckless statements, abuse of authority, and intimidating state officers.
