The Kenya Railways Corporation has declared the reinstatement of the Nairobi-Ruiru commuter train services, following a two-week suspension prompted by heavy rainfall across the country.

In an official statement, the corporation announced the resumption of normal scheduling starting Monday, May 20. The inaugural train will depart from Ruiru station at 6:00 am, arriving at Nairobi Central station by 7:30 am.

“We extend our gratitude for your patience and cooperation as we strive to restore regularity to our commuter services,” the statement expressed.

However, residents of Kahawa West, accustomed to the 9 am train, find themselves excluded from the latest development. Kenya Railways specified that the commuter service for this route would remain suspended until further notice.

“According to the usual timetable, the train will depart from Ruiru station at 6:00 am and arrive at Nairobi Central station by 7:30 am.

Regrettably, the Kahawa train, departing from Kahawa West at 9:00 am, remains suspended until further updates,” the statement clarified.

On May 2, Kenya Railways ceased all commuter train operations due to flooding in various parts of Nairobi, causing inconvenience to numerous city residents.

In a public announcement, the operator disclosed the suspension, citing submerged sections of the track around Nairobi Central Railway Station.

A week later, Kenya Railways declared the resumption of services on the Embakasi Village to Lukenya route and the SGR Link train to Syokimau.

“We are pleased to announce the recommencement of commuter train services starting Tuesday, May 7, 2024, on the following routes: Embakasi Village, Lukenya, and The SGR Link train to Syokimau,” the notice stated at the time.

Nonetheless, the Limuru and Ruiru routes remained inactive due to ongoing repairs on the railway lines following the heavy rainfall.

“Please be informed that commuter services for Limuru and Ruiru remain suspended due to ongoing track repairs.

We also advise passengers that commuter train services are subject to sudden alterations, contingent upon weather conditions and other safety concerns,” the company cautioned.

The company emphasized that these precautionary measures were taken to ensure passenger safety amid the adverse weather conditions prevailing at the time.
