MPs allied with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have raised concerns about a renewed effort by some Kenya Kwanza lawmakers to impeach him.
Sources revealed to NTV that the Kenya Kwanza leadership in the National Assembly has received an impeachment motion against Gachagua, which could be presented to Parliament as soon as next week.
In response, more than fifty lawmakers from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Wiper Party, and independent parties convened on Monday night to strategize on preventing Gachagua’s ouster.
During the night meeting, the legislators pledged to defend Deputy President Gachagua against the impending impeachment at all costs.
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba emphasized that the power to impeach the deputy president lies with the electorate. “Gachagua can only be impeached by the people. It is the Kenyan public who have the authority to grant or withdraw that power,” she stated.
This alleged impeachment effort follows closely on the heels of a week in which over 48 legislators from the Mt. Kenya region voiced their support for Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.
In a press briefing on September 12, the MPs accused Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of fostering division within Mt. Kenya, which they claimed hindered the region’s development.
The caucus also identified Kithure Kindiki as their key connection to President William Ruto, especially regarding development issues. “Given the current situation and the urgency of our mission, we need a link that will establish a connection between us and the National Executive on development matters,” the MPs said in a joint statement.
