Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has announced his intention to sponsor an impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Barasa claims to have already surpassed the required threshold of 177 MPs for the motion’s approval, stating he has gathered 242 signatures from lawmakers across various political parties.

Barasa, a vocal ally of President William Ruto, plans to submit the signatures to Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, this evening. He expressed optimism that the motion will be scheduled for debate on Tuesday, pending the Speaker’s approval.

“I am the sponsor of the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. So far, I have received 242 signatures, and an additional six MPs are awaiting their turn to sign,” he said in a phone interview.

According to Article 150 of the Kenyan Constitution, a Deputy President can be impeached on several grounds, including gross violations of the Constitution, suspicion of committing a crime, or gross misconduct.

These provisions are designed to ensure accountability and uphold the integrity of public office holders. If these grounds are established, the impeachment process can move forward in Parliament, starting with the approval of a motion by the National Assembly.

“I will present the impeachment motion on the floor of the House. By the end of today, I will submit the signatures to the Speaker’s office,” Barasa stated. “It will then be up to the Speaker to consider the motion next week and communicate its receipt, after which I will do my best to advocate for it on the House floor.”
