Moses Kuria Warns Mt. Kenya Against Failing to Collaborate with Other Regions

Senior Economic Advisor Moses Kuria has urged Mt. Kenya politicians and residents to foster peaceful coexistence with other communities, emphasizing that this is crucial for maintaining the region’s representation in future governments.

Speaking during a funeral in Kirinyaga County on Friday, the former Public Service Cabinet Secretary appeared to take a subtle swipe at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, warning that the region could face isolation if it adopts exclusionary political strategies.

“In Parliament, you’ve seen how MPs voted. If Mt. Kenya leaders choose to go it alone without collaborating with other communities, it won’t be enough to compete with the rest of Kenya,” Kuria stated.

He further warned Mt. Kenya leaders against pursuing personal, self-serving agendas, noting that such actions would be counterproductive.

“Our leaders should emphasize crafting winning formulas and not wasting time on strategies that are doomed to fail. As leaders, we are drivers of buses, which have some people hanging,” said Moses Kuria.

“We should not be selfish and do things just to benefit us. We should be careful and not make the same mistakes we have made in the past,” Kuria added.

Moses Kuria’s remarks come amid rising tensions within the Mt. Kenya region, fueled by the ongoing push to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The impeachment effort has ignited strong reactions from a faction of Mt. Kenya leaders, some of whom have threatened to sever ties with the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition if Gachagua is removed from office.

Gachagua has faced criticism for allegedly promoting ethnic politics through his persistent calls for unity within the Mt. Kenya region. The impeachment motion accuses him of stoking ethnic divisions, which, according to critics, is detrimental to the country’s broader interests.

Despite the growing momentum behind the push to impeach him, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to confront his accusers head-on and defend his position, dismissing any speculation about his resignation. “I have no intention of resigning from this job. I will fight until the end,” Gachagua stated during a recent press conference.

He further claimed that the impeachment plot is politically motivated and not based on any constitutional violations, as alleged in the motion.

To remove the deputy president from office, two-thirds of the Senate members must vote in favor of his ouster.

In preparation, Gachagua has assembled a team of top lawyers and witnesses who are set to testify before the Senate next Wednesday, where he is expected to present his defense.
