Kikuyu Elders Rally Behind Mutahi Kagwe for Interior CS Role
Elders from the Kikuyu community convened in Nyeri on Friday, declaring their unanimous support for former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe to join President William Ruto’s government.
Highlighting the absence of a Cabinet minister from the region, the elders underscored the need for Nyeri’s representation in the Kenya Kwanza administration. They called on Kagwe to accept a proposed nomination to a Cabinet role.

The elders praised Kagwe’s wealth of experience in public service, citing his tenure as Health CS under former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his earlier role as Minister of Communications during the late President Mwai Kibaki’s administration.
They advocated for Kagwe’s appointment as Interior Cabinet Secretary, a position currently held in an acting capacity by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi. This arrangement followed the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, which led to Prof. Kithure Kindiki’s elevation to the Deputy President role.

President Ruto is reportedly planning a Cabinet reshuffle aimed at enhancing governance and regional representation, with Kagwe emerging as a strong candidate for the Interior docket.
The elders urged Kagwe to embrace this opportunity, emphasizing that his leadership would not only address Nyeri’s lack of representation but also benefit the nation as a whole.
“We believe in Mutahi Kagwe’s capability to lead and serve effectively,” stated one elder. “His appointment would ensure our interests are represented at the national level.”
