Kericho Governor Eric Mutai has been impeached by the County Assembly following a vote in which 31 members supported the motion.
The impeachment is based on accusations of gross violations of the Constitution, abuse of office, and the misappropriation of public resources. The motion was introduced by Kiprotich Rogony, the MCA for Sigowet Ward.
The County Assembly had initially expected Governor Mutai to appear in person to defend himself against the serious allegations. However, he was absent, opting to send a legal team led by Katwa Kigen in his place.
Mutai claimed that a court order intended to halt the impeachment proceedings was in place, but it was reportedly not served in time, allowing the motion to proceed as planned.
Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, who introduced the motion, accused the governor of several grave offenses, including leading a mob to seize private land in Kericho town to establish an unauthorized dumpsite, and coercing women into inappropriate sexual acts.
The next step for Governor Mutai is the Senate, where the County Assembly speaker is expected to formally notify them of the impeachment, leaving his political fate in their hands.
