Ichung’wah Urges MPs Not to Fear Election Threats as 2027 Approaches
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has advised Members of Parliament not to feel threatened by constituents’ warnings about voting them out in the 2027 elections.
Addressing fellow lawmakers during a parliamentary session, Ichung’wah emphasized the importance of focusing on long-term personal welfare rather than succumbing to electoral intimidation. He encouraged MPs to prioritize their pensions and future planning over fears of losing their seats.
“Many MPs are often threatened, especially around election time. People will say, ‘We’ll send you home in 2027,’ yet you go home every day. Nobody should make you feel intimidated,” Ichung’wah remarked. “The real question is, how will your life look once you’re no longer an MP?”
His comments came during discussions on the Parliamentary Pensions (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which seeks to increase lawmakers’ contributions to their pension schemes. The Bill, sponsored by Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu, is currently at the Second Reading stage.
Ichung’wah shared his personal commitment to securing his future through regular contributions to the Parliamentary pension scheme.

“I contribute Ksh.59,328.50 monthly to the Parliamentary pension scheme, in addition to deductions for the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). It’s important for the public to understand that this is money we deduct from our salaries—it’s not a gift or special allocation,” he clarified.
The Majority Leader highlighted the misconception that MPs pass laws that do not affect them, emphasizing that they, too, bear the financial responsibilities tied to these decisions.
