TSC Initiates Review of Teachers’ Allowances: Knut Advocates for Improved Support

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has urged the national government, through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), to enhance teachers’ allowances, particularly in regions facing hardships.

Knut officials highlight the challenges faced by teachers working in hazardous environments, particularly those vulnerable to banditry, where safety concerns persist.

Joseph Malel, Knut’s National Vice Chairperson, underscores the necessity of uplifting the social and economic status of teachers serving in underserved areas. He lamented recent incidents of banditry-related deaths among teachers in Baringo and Samburu counties, urging prompt government action to deploy additional National Police Reservists (NPRs) to schools situated in high-risk zones.

Malel stresses the need for these areas to be officially recognized as disturbed, urging the TSC to allocate sufficient teaching staff to improve educational standards and provide better allowances for teachers.

Moreover, concerns were raised regarding inadequate facilities in many schools, forcing both teachers and students to rely on makeshift arrangements in market centers. Shortages of staff rooms, quarters, and electricity remain prevalent issues.

The union voices opposition to the 2024 bill, citing its punitive nature and failure to address teachers’ interests adequately.

Furthermore, Knut expresses apprehension regarding newly recruited intern teachers, noting the absence of sufficient permanent and pensionable terms from the TSC to enhance their welfare.
