Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has stated that if the rumored impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is brought forward, a similar motion to oust President William Ruto will follow.
The alleged impeachment plot is being attributed to President Ruto’s allies, amid a growing public perception of a rift between the President’s and Deputy President’s camps. Gachagua has claimed there are efforts to undermine his role in the government.
On Monday, Senator Maanzo emphasized that Ruto and Gachagua were elected as a team, and if Gachagua faces impeachment, they will push for a motion to remove Ruto as well.
“If there is an impeachment motion against the Deputy President, then we will also have an impeachment motion against the President. They’re [elected on] one ticket,” he told Citizen TV’s Daybreak program.
“If there is anyone who has breached the constitution more it is the President, not his deputy… we will tie them together and run the impeachment motions concurrently at the National Assembly and the Senate. I dare them to bring the motion!”
Senator Maanzo defended Deputy President Gachagua, stating, “There is nothing wrong Gachagua has done.” He described the rumored impeachment as “a tool to frustrate him,” citing Gachagua’s advocacy for tea, coffee, and macadamia farmers in the Central Kenya region as the likely reason behind the alleged efforts to remove him from office.
