Gachagua Summoned by DCI Over Assassination Claims
The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to record a statement regarding his claims of attempted assassination. This follows allegations by Gachagua that there have been two attempts to take his life before his recent impeachment.
Serious Allegations by Gachagua
Gachagua, who was recently discharged from Karen Hospital, made these claims during a public appearance. He stated that there were two failed assassination attempts on him before the impeachment process was initiated.
- The first alleged attempt was in Kisumu at the end of August.
- The second attempt, according to Gachagua, occurred in Nyeri just a few days later.
He further explained that the impeachment plan followed the failure of these assassination attempts, which he says were carried out by security agencies.

DCI’s Response
The DCI responded to these claims, calling them serious and warranting immediate investigation. In a statement signed by J.K. Marete, the DCI emphasized that Gachagua’s allegations are not to be taken lightly.
- The DCI has asked Gachagua to appear at the DCI headquarters on 22nd October 2024 to formally record his statement.
- The investigation aims to promptly and thoroughly examine the matter.
The DCI stated:
“These are serious allegations emanating from a person of your stature and cannot be taken lightly. Your statement is crucial to the investigation.”
Gachagua’s Account of the Assassination Attempts
Gachagua detailed the two alleged attempts on his life, claiming that his team was able to detect poison both times, allowing him to avoid the threats.
- First Attempt (August 30, Kisumu):
Gachagua alleged that undercover agents entered his hotel room, bugged it, and tried to poison his food. He and his team detected the poison in time and avoided harm.
“I was supposed to be killed by food poisoning,” Gachagua stated. - Second Attempt (September 3, Nyeri):
He claimed that a team from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) attempted to poison food meant for him and the Kikuyu council of elders.
“I reported the matter to NIS and asked the officers assigned to my office to leave because I felt unsafe,” Gachagua said.
He believes that the impeachment process started after these assassination attempts failed.
