Counties with the Highest Early Sexual Initiation Among Teens

A recent survey highlights a concerning trend of early sexual activity among adolescents in Kenya.

According to the data, peer influence plays a significant role, with 59 percent of teenage girls reporting that they felt pressured by friends to have boyfriends and engage in sexual activities.

The counties with the highest rates of early sexual initiation among teens include:

• Homa Bay: 34 percent
• Machakos: 32 percent
• Migori: 31 percent
• Nairobi: 29 percent
• Siaya: 29 percent
• Bungoma: 28 percent
• Meru: 27 percent

In contrast, Nakuru County recorded one of the lowest rates, with 17 percent.

According to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS), the median age of first sexual intercourse in Kenya is 18 years for women and 17.4 years for men.
