CJ Koome Issues Stern Warning to New Police Chief Douglas Kanja

Chief Justice Martha Koome has cautioned newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, about the critical need to respect court orders as he begins his tenure.

During Kanja’s swearing-in ceremony, Koome emphasized that law enforcement does not operate in isolation. She called for close collaboration between justice sector agencies such as the judiciary, prosecution, correctional services, and the police through the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ).

“The challenges in the justice sector can only be addressed effectively through a spirit of collaboration. We must eliminate turf wars and silo mentalities that obstruct justice for Kenyans,” Koome remarked.

She further stressed that Kanja’s role as police chief comes with the heavy responsibility of upholding the rule of law. “The police, as enforcers of law and order, must be the strongest defenders of constitutionalism, which includes the absolute duty to respect and enforce court orders.”

CJ Koome’s Warning

Chief Justice Martha Koome has issued a stern warning to the police force under new Inspector General Douglas Kanja, emphasizing that any failure to respect court orders would be a betrayal of justice.

“The police service must set an example by strictly adhering to lawful decisions, serving as a model for all citizens to follow,” Koome declared. She highlighted the fragility of the rule of law, urging for its protection through continuous vigilance.

Koome warned that any deviation from lawful conduct, especially by law enforcement, could lead the country toward chaos. “We must safeguard against this by ensuring that law enforcement remains firmly rooted in legality, accountability, and respect for human rights,” she added.
